(Update 03/05/99: added the orginal version of Astronomy for all those interested.)

Compare for your self. Four versions of Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy" are here to help you compare. The original version appeared on Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties. "Astronomy" was  written by Sandy Pearlman (one time BOC manager and producer), Joe Bouchard (BOC orginal bass player), and Albert Bouchard (BOC orginal drummer).

The four versions here are:

  • From the BOC album Imaginos. Released in 1988, Imaginos was BOC's last studio effort for Columbia. Imaginos was originally planned to be a solo effort from Albert Bouchard, but complications changed the course. The orginal group, reunited to complete the Imaginos project. Imaginos stands as Blue Oyster Cult's most ambitious recording, and argued by many, their best. This version features Buck Dharma (Donald Roeser) on vocal.

  • From the BOC album Cult Classic. Released in 1994, Cult Classic is a collection of newly recorded BOC standouts. It is believed that this record was released due to new interest in BOC in reaction to Steven King's The Stand which featured "Don't Fear the Reaper". This version features Eric Bloom on vocal.

  • From the Metallica album Garage Inc. Released in 1998, Metallica pays homage to the orginal. A beautiful (?) interpretation of one of BOC's best tunes.

  • From the BOC album Secret Treaties. Released in 1974, Secret Treaties contains some of BOC's most loved (?) tunes including Flaming Telepaths, Dominance and Submission, Sub Human, ME 262, and ... well the whole damn album. This is the orginal version of Astronomy.

These downloadable files are recorded in MP3 format, for the best sound quality and fastest download possible. Two players for the MP3 format are listed below the files for those who do not have a player.

The orginal lyrics are also included here, below the player list.

To listen to these three versions of "Astronomy" download one of these players:

  • WinAmp v. 2.05 - Very nice player. Plays MP3 files reliably.
  • Microsoft MediaPlayer - Better sound quality than WinAmp, but without all the features and less reliability.

ASTRONOMY
( - J. Bouchard - A. Bouchard - S. Pearlman - )

Clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Like acid and oil on a madman's face
His reason tends to fly away
Like lesser birds on the four winds
Like silver scrapes in May
And now the sand's become a crust
Most of you have gone away

Come Susie dear, let's take a walk
Just out there upon the beach
I know you'll soon be married
And you'll want to know where winds come from
Well it's never said at all
On the map that Carrie reads
Behind the clock back there you know
At the Four Winds Bar

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

Four winds at the Four Winds Bar
Two doors locked and windows barred
One door to let to take you in
The other one just mirrors it
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

Hellish glare and inference
The other one's a duplicate
The Queenly flux, eternal light
Or the light that never warms
Yes the light that never, never warms
Or the light that never
Never warms
Never warms
Never warms

The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Miss Carrie nurse and Susie dear
Would find themselves at Four Winds Bar

It's the nexus of the crisis
And the origin of storms
Just the place to hopelessly
Encounter time and then came me

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

Call me Desdinova
Eternal light
These gravely digs of mine
Will surely prove a sight
And don't forget my dog
Fixed and consequent

Astronomy...a star
