Missions Work Impacted by India-Pakistan Conflict

Carrollton, TX--June 7, 2002--With the Indian military planning to invade the Pakistani-occupied region of Kashmir by mid-June, the international quest for peace between India and Pakistan intensifies. Indian military sources say the campaign would involve air strikes followed by ground assaults, with a slim chance of nuclear-weapon involvement. The U.S. and Britain are now calling for their citizens in India to leave at once, a directive issued after Pakistan rejected India’s offer for joint border patrols in Kashmir.

“I believe we need to see this situation from an eternal perspective,” said K.P. Yohannan, president of Gospel for Asia, a missions organization based near Dallas, Texas. “In light of the fact that God has recently beenng the way for millions in the Indian subcontinent to come into the kingdom, this is spiritual warfare. It is nothing but a satanic plot to take millions to hell.” Yohannan urges all Christians to pray earnestly for peace between India and Pakistan.

Gospel for Asia has a significant number of missionaries working in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. Daily they face harassment and persecution in this predominantly Muslim state as they evangelize villages with the Gospel. They haved dozens of mission stations, planted three churches, and operate four schools attended by 150 children. “Our missionaries and the believers in India and Pakistan need our prayers in these urgent times,” said Yohannan.

Established in 1979, Gospel for Asia is involved in pioneer evangelism and church planting in the 10/40 Window. More than 13,000 national missionaries are working in eight nations: India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In the last ten years, they have established 17,500 churches and mission stations. GFA also operates 128 Bible schools on the Indian subcontinent, where nearly 7,000 students are preparing for ministry.
