STORM CHASING TEAM INTERCEPTS RECORD NUMBER OF TORNADOES IN 2003

ss
Arlington, Texas – July 17, 2003 – Tempest Tours, a Texas-based group of veteran storm chasers, announced today that it had intercepted a record number of tornadoes during its normal operations in May and June. The company, lead by some of the nation’s top chasers, conducts 6 to 10 day expeditions for guests from around the world who come to the Great Plains to see a tornado up-close. The group intercepted a record 20-plus tornadoes between May 8 and June 24.

“We were able to look through our archived video and count at least 23 tornadoes,” said Tempest Tours president and founder Martin Lisius. “There were even more tornadoes that were either not photographed, or were too brief to count, so we stopped at 23 for a minimum number,” he said.

The high number of intercepts this year can be attributed to the existence of a few especially potent storm systems and the team’s continually improving techniques. “We saw a persistent tornadic weather pattern on the edge of the Plains during the first two weeks of May.” Lisius said. “That exceptional period was followed by a long, quiet period, and then several active systems in June. The biggest day, in terms of tornado count, was June 24 when we intercepted at least 14 tornadoes in South Dakota. Also, we’ve worked hard to improve our techniques which helped us to forecast the right target and intercept the best storm nature could deliver on any given day,” he said.

Tempest Tours conducts storm chasing expeditions each spring for guests wanting to witness nature’s most spectacular weather in-person, and to expand their knowledge of earth’s dynamic atmosphere. This year’s guests traveled from across the US, Europe, South America and Asia to join the Tempest team who emphasize education and safety.
