In the history of rock and roll, there is no one who can rival the influence of Bob Dylan on popular music. At his peak, Dylan defined a style that blended social protest, self-creation, and whirling poetic imagery in unprecedented ways: in the process, paving the road for every singer-songwriter to follow. The Best of Dylan Volume 2 is a carefully culled retrospective that spans Dylan's career from "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" to the 1999 single "Things Have Changed." Volume 2 ranges from the bitter "Positively 4th Street" - once called by Leonard Bernstein "the most vicious song to hit the top 40" - to the melancholy pop of "I Want You." There are also plenty of obscure tracks, such as a previously unavailable Oh Mercy outtake of "Dignity," and the hard to find 80's collaboration with the Grateful Dead, "Silvio." The tracks on this compilation are all essential listening, even for the most moderate of fans.
This package also includes an excellent bonus disc of live material from Dylan's 1999 tour. Dylan's road band is in fine form, breathing new life into the 60's classic "Blowing in the Wind" and displaying great group interplay on the lengthy track "Highlands," from Dylan's 1997 album Time Out of Mind. These live tracks represent Dylan's best live work in years.
