Review of John Fogerty - John Fogerty

It had been three long years since Creedence Clearwater Revival had dissolved into a morass of threats, allegations, and law suits when Fogerty decided to release his first solo album. His self-titled debut, released in 1975, picks up where CCR left off. With Fogerty's guitar still cracklin' with swamp fever and voice sounding better than ever, Fogerty runs through ten songs of incredible depth and polish. This is gritty Southern pop at its best.

The album's lead track is the hit single "Rockin' All Over the World," which is so hot you could literally break into a sweat, while the cut "Flyin' Away" is a ballad cool enough to send chills up your spine. The way the album effortlessly counter-balances the smooth ballads with the more ballsy rock-oriented tracks is its true strength. The album's only misstep is a shallow reading of the Jackie Wilson classic "Lonely Teardrops," which does not improve on the original.

Over the next two decades, Fogerty went on to release three more solo works, none of which has the same urgency of sound, relevance, or depth of songwriting that this mid-70's classic delivers. The fact that this album remains unreleased in America is a crime.
